In numerology, we believe we experience nine-year periods of time called Personal Year Cycles.
I call knowing your Personal Year number knowing the theme to your party. You don’t want to show up at the wrong party in the wrong outfit for an entire year! (seriously . . . !)
We all feel this shift in energy, don’t we? We get restless toward the end of the year, as the New Year’s Resolution frenzy get underway.
Numerologically speaking, there’s a very real energetic transition that happens for each of us from year to year.
We feel this energy whether or not we understand numerology—or even believe in numerology. When you learn the theme to each Personal Year, you can align with the energy of the year rather than push against it. Know your theme and you’ll find that you have much more success throughout the year. Or at least you’ll be able to extract deeper meaning about why things are happening and how to make sense out of it.
Also note that the Personal Year Cycle runs from January 1 – December 31 (not from birthday to birthday), even though I find that the energy related to your Personal Year intensifies around your birthday. It also comes to a crescendo during the month of September.
Please be aware that some numerologists calculate the Personal Year to run from birthday to birthday.
It’s up to you to decide which school of thought you feel is correct. When I refer to the Personal Year, I’m referring to a start of January 1 and an ending on December 31.
Remember also, when you’re in a Personal Year that has the same number as your Life Path, you’ll feel double indemnity from the slings and arrows of the year—you’re going to feel all the positives doubly. This also means that you’re going to be doubly challenged with the obstacles inherent in the year’s theme.
When you experience a Personal Year that is the same as your Life Path number (or another of your core numbers), the year offers you many experiences and opportunities to bolster where you might have a weak link that needs strengthening within that particular theme. This simply might show up as more intensity or more dramatic occurrences or experiences that revolve around the key themes of your year.
Calculate the Personal Year
EXAMPLE
Take the date of birth: December 16, 1959
Use only the MONTH and DAY:
December is 12: 1 + 2 = 3
Day is 16: 1 + 6 = 7
Then use the CURRENT YEAR (whatever it happens to be!)
2026 = 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10; 1 + 0 = 1
Now add the month, day, and current year together.
3 + 7 + 1= 11 This is a Master 11/2 Personal Year

In addition to the core elements of the number 2, you have the added intensity related to the Master number 11, offering additional challenges.
Yet the potential benefits are enormous. Along with it being a slower, relationship-oriented and emotional year, you’ll be presented with opportunities to learn profound spiritual lessons. This can manifest in every way imaginable—from coping with crisis to embracing massive success.
With an 11/2 Personal Year, you might not feel as though things aren’t slower at all given you’re also working with the double 1.
Even if it’s a hard driving year, you’ll still experience more than your share of halts, delays, and issues requiring a heightened level of patience with demands that you relax into divine timing.
The magnitude of the effect of the experiences you engage with this year can’t be underestimated in the bigger scheme of your life, yet you won’t understand the depth of the lessons until later.
Be aware that you can experience a higher level of nervous tension during an 11/2 Personal Year.
This is a magical period of time and yet not immediately of the “sparkles and unicorns” variety! The Master number 11 is the number of spiritual illumination. If you’re into astrology, you might think of this cycle of time as your Chiron year—a time where you get to take a look at the nature of your spiritual and emotional wounds. Then you get to meet up with them, acknowledge them, and do some deep work around healing them.
An 11/2 Personal Year won’t allow denial or avoidance.
And if that weren’t enough, chances are that this isn’t much of a slower year at all.
In fact, it can feel even more hard driving and busier than last year! There’s a lot to handle and a lot to process. Understand that this can be a time where you find yourself with surprising success, unexpected notoriety or even fame can come knocking at your door. The 11/2 Personal Year supports any artistic creativity. It’s also a year where your intuition is highly activated and when you might feel called to heal and transform others through selfless-service and artistic creativity.
The year can feel more conflicted than usual. You might have a tendency to question your work, feeling as though you need to do more, something different or something more important. When you develop your intuitive guidance system, you’ll have less difficulty discovering and acting on your true passion. When in doubt, place your feet firmly on the ground and make the effort to bring ideas into form.
On the flip-side, working with the intensity of the double 1’s can bring challenges in not getting too carried away with your own self-importance. The 11 is the spiritual messenger, plain and simple. Yet there’s really nothing “plain” or “simple” about it!
This is a year to balance and embrace both yin and yang—doing and being.
